TheQuest

The task is to investigate the world of poetry and come up with a few poems on your own.

TheProcess and Resources

Start by exploring the background information. These links describe different types of poetry as well as tricks and tools.

Then investigate the links in other categories. Follow what's interesting to you and browse. Enjoy yourself.

Pick out a few favorite poems, and think about how you could write a poem like that. Poetry involves a lot of brainstorming, so don't worry about whether it's 'good' or not, just have fun and write!

 Phase1 - Background

These links will give you examples of different sorts of poems and advice on how to write them.

 Phase2 - Looking Deeper

What follows are four sets of links. You may explore as many as you wish.

As you explore, decide on 1) who your favorite poet is, and 2) what your favorite subject for a poem is.  You will need this for Phase 3.

for Advanced Readers

These are poems for the upper grades.

The following link are especially for kids!

Haiku

Flying through the sky
Some are very big and small
Fly fly fly away.

by Gabrielle, age 8

These links are all about haiku, the simple and short poetry form that requires that you Count Your Syllables!

Hmm...poetry and math?...

 Limericks

There was a young gentleman from France
Who did nothing but dance.
He would do foxtrot and tango
While eating a mango,
And at last he was carried away in a trance.

Dima - Vladimir Linguistic School No. 23., Vladimir,
Russia

The very funniest kind of poetry.

 Phase3 - Creation

Now that you've explored, it's time to write some (4 poems)

1. Choose a favorite poem and write one of your own in the same style.

2. Choose another favorite and write one on the same subject.

3. Write one or more haiku.

4. Try your hand at a limerick.

5. For your grand finale, write a poem and illustrate it!

 Conclusion

Great job!!

Now, time to reflect. Write a short essay (2 paragraphs) answering the following questions.

What makes a poem a poem? What are some good uses for poetry? What did you learn that you didn't know before? Did you think you could write a poem? Will you ever write one again? What else would you like to say on this subject?

Last step: Put your name on your work
...

We're going to put your creations up in the classroom!
